Facebook Safety Check Tool

Safety Check

Safety Check is a new tool that allows its users to connect with their friends, family and loved ones in the time of an occurrence of a natural disaster.Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg mentioned on his Fan page that at the time of a natural disaster many people move towards social media sites to keep aware of their loved ones. Safety check will automatically update a status that will notify your loved ones that you are safe.
As Mark Zuckerberg explained that the need for such type of tool was felt important after a large magnitude earthquake and following a tsunami hit Japan.
The Safety check is available through Mobile Web, Web or through iOS or Android app.
Facebook Vice President of Product Management Naomi Gleit, Software Engineer and Product Manager Sharon Zeng stated that, "The company will determine your location by looking at the city you have listed in your profile, your last location if you've opted in to the Near by Friends product, and the city where you are using the internet". When people are found in affected area, an automatic notification is set up that will ask whether user are "safe" or "not in the area". After the user chooses the "safe" option an automatic status update from Facebook will notify all friends that the user is safe. It has an option that will allow the user to receive Safety Check notification from their friends instead of finding their status on their newsfeeds. There's also a feature that allows users to also mark their friends as safe, so that their friend who may be with them or who doesn't have internet access can assure their safety. Safety Check was designed after observing that majority of users took way towards social media sites at the time of natural disaster. There is also a comment section below the statuses of their friends for quick and easy conversation.
